FBN – Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology
About
The Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) pursues an interdisciplinary and systemic approach, which is realised by highly specialised working groups in efficient spatial and content-related cooperation for various biological functional levels. We conduct research into responsible livestock farming as an indispensable part of sustainable agriculture. The animal is at the centre of scientific questions, from the genome to metabolism and behaviour. In order to meet the requirements of practice in an interdisciplinary manner and to develop solutions for existing conflicts of objectives in the contexts of animal welfare, climate protection and biodiversity, we are focussing our research on four main topics:
- Individualising farm animal husbandry
- Farming animals in sustainable resource cycles
- Coping with critical life phases of farm animals
- Promoting diversity in animal farming
Mission
We conduct research into responsible and resource-conserving livestock farming as an indispensable part of sustainable agriculture.
At FBN, we develop concepts for the agricultural livestock farming of the future. We conduct research into the physiological and ethological capabilities of animals, their interaction with the environment and the underlying regulatory and adaptive mechanisms. This enables us to derive scientifically grounded insights and sustainable solutions that reconcile animal welfare and health, efficient resource utilisation and the promotion of biodiversity. In this way, we support sustainable agriculture that addresses both the needs of the animals and the requirements of society.
