About
The National Center National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA), integrated in 2021 into the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is a reference Institute in agri-food and forestry science and technology, at national and international level. Its objective is to support sustainable economic growth and the well-being of society, through research and innovation in the agricultural and forestry sectors.
CSIC is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Secretary of State of Science, Innovation and Universities, its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress.
Vision
INIA-CSIC, in its task of coordination and foresight, covers all the areas and disciplines concerning livestock production, in close collaboration with the relevant socioeconomic sectors and with equivalent institutions in the Autonomous Regions. INIA’s lines of research are directed towards addressing the economic and social demands and new challenges of the agrifood sector.
INIA-CSIC carries out its research responsibilities in its various Centres and Departments (including Forest Research Centre (CIFOR), the Animal Health Research Centre (CISA), and the Plant Genetic Resources Centre (CRF), as well as at the Departments of Biotechnology, Environment, Animal Breeding, Plant Protection, Animal Reproduction and Food Technology). In relation to animal health and zoonosis, CISA-INIA (Animal Health Research Centre) is a centre for research and surveillance in the prevention, diagnosis and control of transmissible diseases under conditions of biosecurity and biocontainment (BSL3). It is particularly focused on emerging, re-emerging and transboundary infectious diseases of livestock causing economical and sanitary impact, including zoonosis and resistance to antimicrobials. CISA-INIA is Reference Laboratory for African swine fever in the EU and for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It has been designated during 2015 as Reference Centre in Biosafety for FAO.
INIA-CSIC in the Animal Task Force
INIA-CSIC directs all its activities towards the continued and sustainable progress of the agricultural and food technology sectors, where international collaboration has an important role. The expertise of INIA-CSIC in the field of animal production and health can provide a useful contribution to promote a sustainable and competitive livestock sector in Europe.
