About CIEL
CIEL (Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock) is one of four UK Agri-Tech Centres funded through Innovate UK, the UK’s strategic innovation agency.  The Centres are a unique collaboration between Government, academia and industry to drive greater efficiency, resilience and wealth across the agrifood sector; turning ideas into new products and services that will generate economic growth.
CIEL is driving new industry-led research and innovation to position the UK’s livestock sector as a world-leader in productivity, quality and sustainability.
It is the central point of access for the UK livestock sector to the world-class facilities and expertise of leading research institutions across the UK. By drawing together knowledge & skills, technical specialisation and research facilities across multiple institutions, CIEL is helping to streamline and simplify the research & innovation process:
  • Collaborating with business and academia to deliver transformations to productivity and product quality across the livestock sector
  • Investing in research and infrastructure to drive new ideas, innovation and technology
  • Creating collaborative, industry-led partnerships that deliver value across the entire food supply chain

Vision
The vision CIEL shares with the wider family of Agri-Tech Centres is to drive forward a more efficient, profitable and resilient agrifood supply chain.
CIEL is currently working with its research and industry partners to address the ‘Grand Challenges’ for livestock production. These include: Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and Gut Health; Controlling Foodborne Pathogens; Reducing the Impact of Endemic Diseases; Improving Resource Efficiency; Maintaining & Improving Product Quality; and Managing Environmental & Economic Sustainability.
Since 2016 achievements to date include more than £65m invested in new facilities and research across all main livestock species with provision of open access for wider industry use and commercial scale capability.
