Animal Task Force's 5th seminar
A transatlantic perspective on visions and strategic research agenda for animal productions in Europe and the USA
On November 17, the 5th Animal Task Force Seminar took place in Brussels. The Animal Task Force’s 5th Seminar provided a transatlantic perspective on visions and strategic research agenda for animal productions in Europe and the USA, and involved attendees in an interactive session on Precision Livestock Farming.
In the morning,
Anne Mottet, FAO policy office set the scene at international level, providing the perspective of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Bernard D. Goldstein, Professor Emeritus at University of Pittsburgh and Chair of the Committee on the Considerations for the Future of Animal Science Research inspired then the audience with a stimulating speech on the role and perspectives of animal science research in food security and sustainability. Finally,
Jean-Charles Cavitte from the European Commission,
Fredrick Federley from the European Parliament and
Stephen Butler (TEAGASC-ATF) provided the European perspective and agenda.
In the afternoon a special break-out groups session provided an interactive, stimulating and fruitful insight on the prospects of PLF in farm and food practices. No lectures, keynote speeches or didactics. Participants were really dive into the topic, becoming actors of the session and writing themselves the path towards an effective and productive implementation of PLF.
After the introduction of
Martin Scholten, ATF President and
Daniel Berckmans, project leader of the EU-funded project on Precision Livestock Farming, “EU-PLF project”, the break-out groups, chaired by leading experts in the field, brought participants to discuss different aspects of applied PLF and the way ahead.
